OTHER COUNTRIES
How does Australia compare against other countries ?
An increasing number of countries have abolished their old policies barring men who have sex with men from blood donation and have adopted individual risk assessment instead.
These include countries similar to Australia, such as Canada, the UK, the Netherlands and France.
According to a review of overseas research and policies on blood donation by Dr Sharon Dane, the best-practice policy is in the UK.
Since June 2021, all blood donors in the UK, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, are asked if they have had anal sex with more than one partner in the preceeding three months. They are allowed to give blood if they answer "no".
